Review of Selina Tested Episode 23

 Hi people, this is coming from this quarter and I think it is coming pretty later but as the saying goes, "better late than never". Let's just get started!

I will be doing a review/critique of this all interesting movie/series that has caught the attention of almost everyone. One thing to note is this, everything I write or comment is solely my point of view. It will interest us to know that we all have the license to critique or review a work of art. Talking one down because of the person's position on certain topics isn't the best.

Enough of the sermon. I will be reviewing this wonderful work of art in no special order. Today I will be looking at Episode 23. 

This episode is important because it highlights the steps the Three Friends (Chiboy, Aboy & Odoku) embarks on to undo their common enemy, Sibi. Sibi seems indestructible but all time shall time.

Welcome to Episode 23 titled OTUAKA.

My point of interest in this episode is the dialogue or should I say, the language. The defining language of the entire work has been the street language of a group of people very unique to the Niger Delta part of Nigeria. It is a mixture of the traditional pidgin English common to Nigeria and certain coded words used to pass messages across.

Looking at languages from the point of Nigerian movies (Nollywood), I have come to understand that it is a very important aspect of the entire story. This is very evidential when it comes to epic stories. Although polished English is been used but the dialect of the people depicted is not shoved aside.

In Episode 23, the medicine man or Witch man tend to go away from this norm. In other episodes where we have medicine men and women come on board, they try to use the language of the work or the common pidgin English. Take for example, the medicine man who worked for Sibi or the Medicine woman who was taking care of Chiboy's mother. In Nigerian movies, the medicine man either speaks mostly pidgin English, Vernacular or combination of both, mixed polished English. But this was not the case with Otuaka in this episode.

Above all, I enjoyed every other aspect of the work. The characters, Chiboy and Tallest will always remain who they are. Even in the face of challenges, he (Chiboy) still allows his emotions becloud his sense of reasoning. How on earth will a man came to seek help for his dying comrade abandon him and starts from after a supposed enemy?

Tallest, the Tax Collector, the man of the show. The braggart who does not have the muscles to face the whatever that comes his way. But whether you like it or not, he always has his way of escaping even in the face of strong challenges. One would quickly say he is a flat character but to me he isn't. To me, he is a round character. He keeps the story going. He is the center of attraction.
